iRights.info veranstaltet am 9. und 10. September in den Räumen der Deutschen Kinemathek ein Symposium zum Thema „Verbotene Filme“. Ich habe zusammen mit Ilja Braun eine Mashup-Rolle zusammengestellt, die am Donnerstag um 19.30 Uhr im Arsenal gezeigt wird und moderiere am Freitag ab 13.30 ein Gespräch zwischen der Konzeptkünstlerin Susanne Gerber, der Kuratorin und Leiterin des Video-Forums des Neuen Berliner Kunstvereins Kathrin Becker und dem Medienarchäologe und Videokünstler Stefan Eckel von der Gruppe reproducts.de.

Aus dem Einleitungstext der Kinemathek:

Ein Spielfilm verschwindet im Giftschrank, weil er – vermeintlich oder tatsächlich – gegen Gesetze verstößt. Eine Dokumentation wird erst gar nicht gedreht, weil das Justiziariat sagt, man könne die zu erwartenden Klagen nicht durchstehen. Zugleich: Filme, die nach geltendem Recht verboten sind, können weltweit angeschaut werden – drei Aspekte des selben Themas. Das Symposium „Verbotene Filme“ am 9. und 10. September 2010 wird sich damit auseinandersetzen, welche rechtlichen Beschränkungen von Filmen es gibt und wie sie sich auf die Produktion, Distribution und Rezeption auswirken. Denn diese wirken sich auch auf den Umgang mit den entsprechenden Filmen in Archiven, Mediatheken und Kultureinrichtungen aus.

The Kinemathek has an English introduction:

A film is banned because it – allegedly or actually – violates the law. A documentary is never realized because a legal advisor warns of possible law suits that would pose too great a financial risk. At the same time, certain films, that are prohibited under the current law, can be watched around the globe. These three scenarios constitute different aspects of a overarching topic. The symposium “Prohibited Films” will serve as a forum to discuss the various legal restrictions that apply to films, and examine the impact that these restrictions have on film production, distribution and reception.

This site is woefully out of date. Not that a lot has happened but if this is supposed to be a record of what is happening in my professional life then I guess I have to add it now. I will start working at the Humboldt-University soon as a member of the project team for IUWIS, (Infrastruktur Urheberrecht für Wissenschaft und Bildung) copyright for science and education. The webserver will be at www.iuwis.de but not for a few weeks. I was on a panel on books and the internet at the TAZ congress in April (report on TAZ.de). I’m still working for iRights.info and I just finished my second Creative Writing course at the Open University – results in August.

Und auf Deutsch: Fast ein Jahr ist vorbei, seit ich die Seite geupdated habe. Nicht dass viel passiert ist, aber wenn dies eine Chronik sein soll, was beruflich bei mir los ist, dann muss ich das wohl nachtragen. Mit iRights.info im Rahmen des Projekts Arbeit 2.0 veranstalten wir die Tagung „Kreativität und Urheberrecht“ im HartwareMedienKunst-Verein in Dortmund. Ich bin am Sonntag dran und diskutiere mit Veronika Mirschel, Alexandra Manske, Manuela Zechner und Marc Röbbecke über das Thema Organisation von Kreativen. Hier die Kurzbeschreibung:

Arbeitnehmer schließen sich traditionell zu Gewerkschaften zusammen, um gemeinsam ihre Interessen durchzusetzen. Viele Kreative jedoch reiben sich als Einzelkämpfer in Verhandlungen mit Verlagen, Galerien oder Plattenfirmen auf. Wer vertritt die Interessen der prekarisierten Kulturarbeiter im 21. Jahrhundert? Was bieten Gewerkschaften den kreativen Freiberuflern, können sie die Vielfalt der Beschäftigungsformen erfassen? Sind alternative Zusammenschlüsse außerhalb der institutionalisierten Künstler- und Autorenorganisationen eine Lösung? Oder gehört die Zukunft sozialen Netzwerken, die ihren Kampf für eine faire Bezahlung in Facebook organisieren?

“Speech and the ability for meta-reflection on one’s language are inherent characteristics of human beings. … [T]he main thing the [artworks] have in common is that they take as their starting point an exploration of language, with all its arbitrary structures and rules, its various functions within society, its absurdities and constraints on the individual. Rather than focusing on the isolated – literary / literal – artwork, the exhibition highlights general artistic tendencies toward a discursive process that originates on the Internet and finds its way back to the ‘virtualities of real life’.”

Diana McCarty and I are going to hang out at Kunstamt Bethanien this weekend. Tatiana Bazzichelli and Gaia Novati invited artists, hackers and activists to discuss the terms of hacking and making art in Eastern Europe. We are going to make net radio and interview everybody who crosses our way – so beware! It’s not yet clear how and when and where (well, it kind of is but we are still setting up and figuring things out) but watch the Hack.fem.east website for more info and our contributions.

Es hat lange gedauert, aber endlich ist es da: das iRights.info-Buch “Urheberrecht im Alltag – Kopieren, bearbeiten, selbermachen”. Es versammelt die Texte, die wir für die Website iRights.info von 2005 bis 2007 geschrieben haben. Veröffentlicht wurde das Buch von der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung. Deshalb kann man es auch zum sensationellen Preis von 2 Euro dort erwerben.

The new project at iRights.info (which is a website on copyrights in the digital realm where I’m working as an editor – just to remind you) is called „Arbeit 2.0“ (I don’t know if it should be translated as “Work 2.0“ or “Labour 2.0“ – I’m not quite clear on the difference). It deals with the changes digitalization brought about regarding creative work/labour and copyrights. The iRights.info-team is researching how the different genres of creative work, for example music, journalism, art, design etc. have changed in the last ten or so years, what the conditions of work are, how much can be earned etc. The other part of the project will be an exhibition in Dortmund at the Hartware MedienKunstVerein
in July, curated by Inke Arns and Francis Hunger who are the other part of the “Arbeit 2.0“ team. We already did a presentation at the Transmediale and have a blog where in February the composer and conductor Christian von Borries reported from China.

Seit Oktober 2007 forscht iRights.info unter dem Titel „Arbeit 2.0“ darüber, wie das Urheberrecht und Digitalisierung kreative Arbeit beeinflusst und verändert – und natürlich umgekehrt. Unsere alte Website soll – behutsam – erneuert und modernisiert werden. Das wird aber noch ein paar Wochen dauern. Mittlerweile gibt es aber schon ein „Arbeit 2.0“-Blog, in dem im Februar der Komponist Christian von Borries aus China, „dem Land der Raubkopien“, berichtete und wir, die Redakteure von iRights.info und unsere Partner vom Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund, mit denen wir das Projekt gemeinsam durchführen, unsere Fundstücke und vorläufigen Ergebnisse posten. Der zweite Teil des Projekts wird eine Ausstellung in der Phoenixhalle in Dortmund sein, kuratiert von Inke Arns und Francis Hunger vom HMKV.

The Language of Resistance is an attempt to confront the dissonance within European Feminist discourses and establish a forward thinking agenda that takes into account the multiple discourses and histories of the past. As part of a series of events that have taken place in Graz, Austria, and Manchester, United Kingdom, the infinite Prologue continues. Rethinking how we view what has already come to pass and how we imagine the future – most importantly, analyzing the conditions for living and working in Europe today from a feminist perspective.
